A Mobile App for Your Gym: Why You Don't Need the App Store
TL;DR
You don't need an app store to have an app that opens on the member's phone with your gym's name and logo, sits on the home screen and receives notifications. A branded web app (PWA) does that; every fix reaches everyone at once, with no release review. The one thing to know: on iOS the install takes two taps.
The hidden cost of a store app
A gym wants to say "we have an app". The store route goes like this: a developer account, a review on every release, members searching and downloading, waiting for updates, and usually another company's name on top of the app. A small fix takes days; you have to tell two hundred members to update.
What a branded web app does
- Your name, your icon. Members tap "Nova Fitness", not "XYZ Fitness Platform".
- Home-screen install. One tap on Android and desktop; Share → Add to Home Screen on iOS.
- Notifications. Session reminders, remaining credit, announcements: they land on the phone.
- Full screen. No browser bar; it looks like an app.
- Instant updates. A fix you ship is on everyone's phone at the next open.
How a member installs it
- Goes to the gym's address (say
nova-fitness.ptlog.dev) or taps the invitation link. - Signs in.
- An "Add to home screen" card appears. A button on Android; a two-step guide on iOS.
- The gym's icon appears on the home screen. Done.

At the front desk, don't say "download the app"; say "go to this address and add it to your home screen". It takes thirty seconds and the member gets their first notification right there.
How QR entry works
The member taps "My entry code"; a single-use QR with a sixty-second life appears. The front desk scans it or the turnstile reads it. The code is verified on the server: without an active package the door stays shut. Screenshots are useless; the code changes every minute.
Where a store app is better
Honestly: if you need continuous background location, wearable sync or a presence in the store listings, you need a store app. For gym management, class booking, remaining credit, programs and notifications, you don't.
Owner, trainer, member: one app, three screens
The same address opens each person's own screen. The owner sees the dashboard, the trainer sees today's calendar and their members' progress, the member sees today's workout and their entry code. Roles and permissions are defined by the gym; nobody sees what they shouldn't.
